Prayer For The Unborn Child

Velma Thomas' heart stopped beating three times -- and her doctors thought she was dead.

She was taken by ambulance to a local West Virginia hospital when her heart stopped after experiencing symptoms of a heart attack. For more than 17 hours, Thomas had no measurable brain waves, according to her doctors.

Doctors tried everything to save Thomas' life, even inducing hypothermia in an attempt to lower her body temperature and stimulate the brain.
.
Her family said their goodbyes and left her side at the hospital to make funeral plans.
.
But after medical staff took Thomas off life support, she miraculously came back to life.
.
"I said, 'God, just show me something,'" her nephew, Daniel Pence, told ABC News.
.
"There were really no signs she had neurological functions," Kevin Eggleston, an internist, told ABC News.

"There was no life there," her son, Tim Thomas, told the Charleston Daily Mail. "Her skin had already started hardening, her hands and toes were curling up."

A Good Way To Donate Bibles To Africa

It was revealed to me this evening a good way to donate Bibles to Africa. I belong to American Bible Society's Bible-A-Month Club. They send to me different things to the mail for me to additionally donate to.

This month is to Africa - Kenya.

Believe me when I tell you that the email stuff supposedly from Nigeria for instance are spam. Some people were hurt from them in trying to respond to the email when they actually tried to send the Bibles.

A better way to help different areas around the world to have Bibles is donating to American Bible Society or to the International Bible Society.

ABS's Bible-A-Month Club you can donate $4.00 per Bible each month to go somewhere in the world. They also translate Bibles into different languages as well.

The Lord showed me that this would be a good way to help.

Zack Dunlap doesn’t remember much from the day he died, but he does remember hearing a doctor declare him brain-dead. And he remembers being incredibly ticked off.
.
“I’m glad I couldn’t get up and do what I wanted to do,” the strapping Oklahoman said in a soft drawl in an exclusive appearance on Monday on TODAY in New York.
.
And what would he have done, asked TODAY’s Natalie Morales, who has followed Dunlap’s miraculous recovery from a Nov. 17 ATV accident that left him with a catastrophic head injury.
.
“Probably would have been a broken window they went out,” the 21-year-old said with a hint of a smile.
.
He’s been through months of rehab, and he’s getting better, but he still has issues with memory and emotional issues.
.
“I feel pretty good, but this is hard,” he said of all the excitement of being in New York and on national television. He is getting better, he agreed, but said the process is frustrating.
.
“I just ain’t got the patience,” he said quietly.
.
He was accompanied by his parents, Pam and Doug Dunlap, and his younger sister, Kacy, who are more than happy to wait while he recovers.
.
“He’s been doing amazingly well,” Pam Dunlap said. “He does still have a lot of memory issues. It just takes a long time for the brain to heal after such a traumatic injury. It may take a year or more before he completely recovers. But that’s OK. It doesn’t matter how long it takes. We’re just thankful and blessed that we have him here.”
.
‘There was no activity’
.
Doctors have no explanation for why Dunlap is alive. He had been riding his souped-up ATV with some friends on that fateful Saturday, less than a week before Thanksgiving. They had participated in a parade that morning, popping wheelies and impressing the crowd, and then they had gone out riding on their machines. He did not wear a helmet.
.
Dunlap fell behind his friends on a highway just outside of Davidson, Okla., not far from his home in the ranching town of Frederick and near the Texas border. He gunned his machine to catch up, doing another wheelie on the back wheels. When he dropped the front wheels back to the pavement, he saw that he was going to crash into a friend’s machine that had stopped a short way up the road.
.
Dunlap tried to swerve, but flipped his machine and went flying, smashing headfirst and facedown on the asphalt. He remained there motionless, unresponsive to his friends, who quickly called 911.
.
Taken first to a local hospital, he was airlifted 50 miles away to United Regional Healthcare System in Wichita Falls, Texas, where there was a trauma unit that might be able to treat the severe damage he had done to his brain. But 36 hours after the accident, doctors performed a PET scan of his brain and informed his parents, along with other family members who had gathered to keep vigil at the hospital, that there was no blood flowing to Zack’s brain; he was brain-dead.
.
Doctors showed the scan to Zack’s parents, and, Doug Dunlap told Morales, “There was no activity at all. No blood flow at all.”
.
‘They said he was brain-dead’
.
The devastated parents were faced with the horrible decision of either keeping their son hooked up to life-support equipment or pulling the plug and letting his body follow his brain into death.
.
“We didn’t want him as a vegetable,” Doug Dunlap said. “We didn’t know what he was going to be like. They said he was brain-dead and there would be no life, so we were preparing ourselves.”
.
Zack had declared on his driver’s license that he wanted to be an organ donor, so his parents gave permission for doctors to keep his body alive until the organs could be harvested.
.
“Zack has always been a giver. He always wanted to make sure everybody had things going their way,” Doug Dunlap continued. “He didn’t want to give up, and we didn’t want his organs to give up, either. And he didn’t, either.”
.
The decision made, there remained only a wait of several hours while an organ-harvesting team flew in by helicopter. The family spent the time saying goodbye.
.
During her time with him, Zack’s grandmother, Naomi, prayed. Her request was straightforward — “just a miracle,” she told Morales. “He was too young for God to take him.”
.
Some four hours after doctors declared Zack dead, a nurse began to remove tubes from Dunlap. His cousins, Dan and Christy Coffin, both of whom are nurses, were also in the room. Something about Zack’s appearance made them think that he wasn’t as dead as the doctors said. On a hunch, Dan pulled out his bone-handled pocket knife and ran the blade up the sole of one of Zack’s feet.

‘Our son is still alive!’
.
The foot yanked away, but the other nurse said it was a reflex action. So Dan Coffin then dug a fingernail under one of Zack’s nails. Zack yanked his arm away and across his body, and that, the other nurse agreed, wasn’t a reflex action. It was a sign of life.
.
“We went from the lowest possible moment to, ‘Oh, my gosh, our son is still alive!’ ” said his mother. “That was the most miraculous feeling. We had gone from the lowest possible emotion that a parent could feel to the top of the mountains again. We were still very guarded, because we weren’t sure what his prognosis would be, but just to hear the words that he was back with us is something we’ll remember forever.”
.
Doctors warned the family that Zack could have profound brain damage that would prevent his leading anything resembling an active life. But within five days he opened his eyes, and 48 days after the accident, he walked out of a rehab center and returned home, where the entire town gave him a hero’s welcome.
.
He’s working to regain his memories and to control his emotions, and he’d like to go back to his job as a warehouse worker. He also wants to get his driver’s license back.
.
“I’ve been wanting to drive [from] about the day I was back from rehab,” he said.
.
At Morales’ request, Zack reached in the pocket of his jeans and pulled out the pocket knife his cousin had used to prove he was still alive. Dan Coffin had given it to him as a gift and a memento.
.
“It makes me thankful that they didn’t give up,” Zack said, turning the knife over in his hand. “Don’t let the good die young.”

She was six years old when I first met her on the beach near where I live. I drive to this beach, a distance of three or four miles, whenever the world begins to close in on me. She was building a sand castle or something and looked up, her eyes blue as the sea.

"Hello," she said. I answered with a nod, not really in the mood to bother with a small child.

.
"I'm building," she said.

.
"I see that. What is it?" I asked, not caring.

.
"Oh I don't know, I just like the feel of the sand."

.
That sounds good, I thought, and slipped off my shoes. A sandpiper glided by.

.
"That's a joy," the child said.

.
"It's what?"

.
"It's a joy. My mama says sandpipers come to bring us joy."

.
The bird went on down the beach. "Good-bye joy," I muttered to myself, "hello pain," and turned to walk on. I was depressed; my life seemed completely out of balance.

.
"What's your name?" She wouldn't give up.

.
"Ruth," I answered. "I'm Ruth Peterson."

.
"Mine's Wendy,... and I'm six."

.
"Hi, Wendy."

.
She giggled. "You're funny," she said.

.
In spite of my gloom I laughed too and walked on.

.
Her musical giggle followed me. "Come again, Mrs. P," she called. "We'll have another happy day."

.
The days and weeks that followed belonged to others: a group of unruly BoyScouts, PTA meetings, an ailing mother. The sun was shining one morning as I took my hands out of the dishwater.

.
"I need a sandpiper," I said to myself, gathering up my coat. The never-changing balm of the seashore awaited me. The breeze was chilly, but I strode along, trying to recapture the serenity I needed. I had forgotten the child and was startled when she appeared.

.
"Hello, Mrs. P," she said. "Do you want to play?"

.
"What did you have in mind?" I asked, with a twinge of annoyance.

.
"I don't know, you say."

.
"How about charades?" I asked sarcastically.

.
The tinkling laughter burst forth again. "I don't know what that is."

.
"Then let's just walk." Looking at her, I noticed the delicate fairness of her face.

.
"Where do you live?" I asked.

.
"Over there." She pointed toward a row of summer cottages. Strange, I thought, in winter.

.
"Where do you go to school?"

.
"I don't go to school. Mommy says we're on vacation."

.
She chattered little girl talk as we strolled up the beach, but my mind was on other things. When I left for home, Wendy said it had been a happy day. Feeling surprisingly better, I smiled at her and agreed.

.
Three weeks later, I rushed to my beach in a state of near panic. I was in no mood even to greet Wendy. I thought I saw her mother on the porch and felt like demanding she keep her child at home.

.
"Look, if you don't mind," I said crossly when Wendy caught up with me,"I'd rather be alone today."

.
She seemed unusually pale and out of breath.

.
"Why?" she asked.

.
I turned on her and shouted, "Because my mother died!"-and thought, my God, why was I saying this to a little child?

.
"Oh," she said quietly, "then this is a bad day."

.
"Yes, and yesterday and the day before that and-oh, go away!"

.
"Did it hurt?"

.
"Did what hurt?" I was exasperated with her, with myself.

.
"When she died?"

.
"Of course it hurt!" I snapped, misunderstanding, wrapped up in myself. I strode off.

.
A month or so after that, when I next went to the beach, she wasn't there. Feeling guilty, ashamed and admitting to myself I missed her, I went up to the cottage after my walk and knocked at the door. A drawn-looking young woman with honey-colored hair opened the door.

.
"Hello," I said. "I'm Ruth Peterson. I missed your little girl today and wondered where she was."

.
"Oh yes, Mrs. Peterson, please come in." "Wendy talked of you so much. I'm afraid I allowed her to bother you. If she was a nuisance, please accept my apologies."

.
"Not at all-she's a delightful child," I said, suddenly realizing that I meant it. "Where is she?"

.
"Wendy died last week, Mrs. Peterson. She had leukemia. Maybe she didn't tell you."

.
Struck dumb, I groped for a chair. My breath caught.

.
"She loved this beach; so when she asked to come, we couldn't say no. She seemed so much better here and had a lot of what she called 'Happy Days.' But the last few weeks, she declined rapidly...." Her voice faltered. "She left something for you...if only I can find it. Could you wait a moment while I look?"

.
I nodded stupidly, my mind racing for something, anything, to say to this lovely young woman.

.
She handed me a smeared envelope, with MRS. P printed in bold, childish letters. Inside was a drawing in bright crayon hues-a yellow beach, a blue sea, a brown bird. Underneath was carefully printed:

A SANDPIPER TO BRING YOU JOY

.
Tears welled up in my eyes, and a heart that had almost forgotten how to love opened wide. I took Wendy's mother in my arms. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," I muttered over and over, and we wept together.

.
The precious little picture is framed now and hangs in my study. Six words-one for each year of her life-that speak to me of inner harmony, courage, undemanding love. A gift from a child with sea-blue eyes and hair the color of sand-who taught me the gift of love.

I am writing to you today concerning H.Res. 847, introduced by Rep. King of Iowa. I learned about this from the Liberty Counsel, and it is said that it is on the House calendar for today and will need a 2/3 (290 votes) majority to pass.

I am asking for your positive vote on this bill in order to uphold our American holiday of Christmas. I am finding that Christmas has been under fire for the past several years, and that there are influences - that constitute censorship - that wish to negate this fundamental American holiday from the fabric of our society.

I have been quite upset over this.

Please vote positively on this bill H.Res. 847 to uphold our American tradition.

Thank you Darrin Tuck for turning the video into the police which brought to light what Chester "Chet" Arthur Stiles has been doing - which hopefully - God Willing - will bring him to justice soon.

If I had found a video such as this, I honestly would have turned it into the police sooner. Whether it was out of fear of being arrested - which happened - not knowing what to do, or for whatever reason the tape was not turned in sooner - the point is Darrin did try to do the right thing, and turned over the video.

I noticed with the news reports that Darrin isn't getting any credit at all for doing the right and good thing - even if it is belated.

Darrin does look guilty about something - But on this video tape he did the right thing. I'm glad that Darrin didn't decide to burn the tape instead rather than turn it in.

Police Get Tips To Girl's Identity
Detective: Hundreds Of Tips Received On Sex Tape Investigation

PAHRUMP, Nev. -- Officers said they have received more than 100 tips concerning the identity of a girl being abused in a pornographic tape. Nye County police are trying to identify her and her adult male attacker.

"It the most disgusting thing you could possibly imagine," Detective David Boruchowitz said. "The worst thing you could imagine happening to this girl happened."

Boruchowitz said the girl appears to only be 4 to 5 years old when the tape was filmed and, it appears, she has been victimized a lot. Detectives said the crime is gaining national attention, which has led to hundreds of calls about the identity of the girl and the male assaulting her.

"We really know very little," Boruchowitz said. "What we know is Darren Tuck, a local resident, turned in this tape to our detectives division."

Tuck told detectives he found the tape in the middle of the desert. Police said that, after an investigation, they found Tuck had possession of the tape for about five months, showing it to others.

"He's absolutely not telling the whole truth," Boruchowitz said. "I think Darren Tuck could provide more information that could help us in this investigation, although he's chosen not to."
Detectives said Tuck has no prior convictions or arrests of this nature, but has been charged with possession of child pornography and promotion of sexual acts of a minor. If convicted, he could get sentenced to life in prison.

Permanent Vegetative State (PVS) Diagnosis Often
Inaccurate More Data Shows

RHODES, June 21, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - News-Medical.net is reporting on a series of studies that show a high rate of misdiagnosis and inaccuracy in patients deemed to be in a "permanent vegetative state" (PVS). The researchers say that the problem is grounds for "extreme caution" in decisions that might "limit the life chances" of patients. The pretext of a PVS diagnosis is commonly put forward by the euthanasia movement as a reason to allow euthanasia by dehydration, as in the case of Terri Schiavo.

Researchers at the University of Liège in Belgium examined data on over 5900 patients at the intensive care unit at the university hospital. The data showed that of 356 patients diagnosed on admission as being in a vegetative state, just over half left the hospital with some degree of restored consciousness. 59% had recovered enough to obey commands.

The Belgian study said that a quarter of such patients have a good chance of recovery of a "significant proportion of their faculties". Another showed that as many as 40% of PVS diagnosed patients were incorrectly diagnosed as having no cognitive function when in fact they had minimum consciousness.

Experts at the June 16 to 20 European Neurological Society Meeting in Rhodes said the findings showed that greater care had to be exercised with regard to end-of-life decisions. These findings match many other studies that show the PVS diagnosis is frequently inaccurate. As long ago as 1996, a study published in British Medical Journal showed that 43% of patients diagnosed with PVS do not qualify for the diagnosis.

Dr. Steven Laureys, the lead researcher in the Belgian study, said, "Our data shows that acute vegetative state is certainly not rare among patients admitted to intensive care."

"What is important to note is that it may be transient and that the prognosis for patients with impaired consciousness depends to a great extent on the nature of the brain damage."

The transitory nature of the PVS condition is attested by regular news features about patients that doctors had declared incurable 'waking' after significant time in a coma or reduced state of consciousness.

Legal expert and anti-euthanasia activist Wesley J. Smith writes that the research "should give great pause to those who advocate not supplying or quickly removing life support for people with traumatic head injury."

Smith suggested that it should also prevent doctors from dismissing the assertions of family members that a patient has some consciousness. In their fight to save their daughter's life, the family of Terri Schindler-Schiavo were persistently told by doctors that they were only imagining their daughter's reactions to stimuli.

Smith writes, "What really needs to be done is to reject the notion that people with severe brain injuries are somehow less 'human' or are not 'persons.' Unless and until we do that, people in these devastated states will not be safe."

Woman Who Woke After Years In Coma Slips
Back

(AP) COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. A woman who went into a vegetative state in November of 2000 awoke this week for three days, spoke with her family and a local television station before slipping back on Wednesday. "I'm fine," Christa Lilly told her mother on Sunday — her first words in eight months. She has awakened four other times for briefer periods.

"I think it's wonderful. It makes me so happy," Lilly told television station KKTV-TV. She also got to see youngest daughter, Chelcey, now 12 years old, and three grandchildren.

Her neurologist, Dr. Randall Bjork, said he couldn't explain how or why she awoke.

"I'm just not able to explain this on the basis of what we know about persistent vegetative states," he said.

A vegatative state is much like a coma except her eyes remain open.

"The good Lord let me know she's alright, he brings her back to visit every so often and I'm thankful for that," said Minnie Smith, her mother and caregiver after Christa slipped back into the vegetative state.

You may have received the e-mail or the video mail
from two local parents fighting desperately to save
the life of their son.

NBC 10 News Medical Reporter Cherie Bank said it's
heart-wrenching and compelling and makes you long
to help.

Seeing Ben Wallace with his family is sadder yet,
knowing he has the same genetic illness that took
the life of his brother, Zach.

"We just say, 'You have a brother who's with God.
He's your special angel who's always going to be
there for you," said Nathalie Wallace, the boy's
mother.

The problem is the illness that killed Zach and
plagues Ben, but not their sister Olivia, is so rare
it has no name.

"The body begins destroying blood cells. Clots
end up forming, and you can have damage to
your kidneys and your brain," said Dr. Edward
Attiyeh of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Zach had his first seizures around 10 months old.

"Then we found out he was blind, he was paralyzed
from the waist down … and I was nine months
pregnant with Olivia on my knees at his bedside
just saying, 'God, what is happening? What is this?'"
said Nathalie Wallace.

Now, Ben has had the same problems.

"It's just so hard to believe he's the only one in the
world, and maybe through more people viewing
this … that maybe someone will be able to help
more than we're being helped now," said Don
Wallace, the father.

Attiyeh said Ben's problems are triggered by a
missing protein.

While doctors search for what protein it is, they
treat Ben by replacing all of his proteins through
plasma transfusions every week.

"I want a cure. I want an answer. I want a doctor
who says this is what it is and this is how we can
fix it," said Nathalie Wallace.

"I'm not going to lose him … he's going to be OK.
He has to," she said.

The family has taken their boys to the Mayo Clinic,
Johns Hopkins and the best children's hospital in the
country, here in Philadelphia.

While they can treat Ben's symptoms, no one can give
the disease a name.

Ben's doctors say his illness is related to a family of
diseases that are called with TTP (Thrombotic
Thrombocytopenic Purpea, or atypical HUS
(Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome), where the trigger
is an abnormal or missing protein in your plasma.

The result triggers these flares in which blood cells
start breaking down. Doctors don't know if this is a
genetic disease carried on the X chromosome or if
it is autosomal recessive.

Boy in “Hopeless” Vegetative State Awakens

– A young boy, who had previously been
diagnosed as being in a “persistent vegetative
state,” has awakened from a 22 month-long
coma and is breathing on his own.

Devon Rivers collapsed in a seizure during a
phys-ed class in 2004 and his condition was
never explained, though some doctors
suggested it was caused by an unknown viral
infection. Doctors agreed, however, that he had
little hope of recovery.

His mother, Carla Rivers, visited him regularly
and, in addition to physical therapy by his
paediatric nursing home to keep his limbs
supple, she talked to him in the belief that
coma patients can retain their hearing and
some understanding.

"For two years the doctors said there was no
hope," said Carla Rivers. "Everything that
happens in Devon's life is a gain. There's no
losses."

Despite the doctors’ gloomy prognosis, eleven
year-old Devon is now being prepared for
occupational therapy to help him re-learn
motor skills and is able to play with his
siblings. Doctors cannot explain the reason
either for his unexpected awakening or for
his steady recovery.

In August of this year his mother, Carla
Rivers, noticed that he began turning his
head to follow movement; instead of a blank
stare, he was reacting to his environment.
Days later Devon was breathing without a
respirator.

Carla Rivers said, “Devon may make a full
recovery or what we see today may be what
we get…God's plan is greater than ours.
There's nothing we can do to force it any
sooner or hold it back,” she said.

Coma patients and others with severe
cognitive disabilities have been labelled
“hopeless” only to recover frequently
enough that some doctors and ethicists
are questioning the accuracy of the diagnosis
of “persistent vegetative state” (PVS).

The diagnosis is ambiguous in that symptoms
of patients can vary greatly and still be called
“vegetative.” A 1996 study published in the
British Medical Journal showed that 43%
of patients diagnosed with PVS do not qualify
for the diagnosis.

In 2003, Kate Adamson, a former coma patient
who had been diagnosed PVS, appeared on the
television talk show the O'Reilly Factor. She said
that, like Terri Schiavo, the hospital had removed
her feeding tube that was only reinserted after
eight days when her lawyer-husband threatened
to sue the hospital.

UK's Independent today, controversial Princeton
University Professor Peter Singer repeats his
notorious stand on the killing of disabled newborns.
Asked, "Would you kill a disabled baby?", Singer
responded, "Yes, if that was in the best interests of
the baby and of the family as a whole."

People who oppose Singer's position have
maintained that Singer is the logical extension of
the culture of death and that society will eventually
embrace his stance if there is no shift to the culture
of life. Alex Schadenberg, Executive Director of the
Euthanasia Prevention Coalition commented to
LifeSiteNews.com about Singer saying, "at least
he's consistent."

In fact, Singer himself uses the abortion debate to
justify his murderous stance.

"Many people find this shocking," continued
Singer, "yet they support a woman's right to
have an abortion." Concluding his point, Singer
said, "One point on which I agree with opponents
of abortion is that, from the point of view of ethics
rather than the law, there is no sharp distinction
between the foetus and the newborn baby."

Singer's position, similar to the culture of death, is
that there is no inherent dignity in man, there is
no sanctity of human life. Man deserves no special
treatment since, Singer rejects that man was
created in the image and likeness of God.

Asked about the choice between killing 10 cows or

because they were of less value, but because humans
would mourn the death more. "I've written that it is
much worse to kill a being who is aware of having a
past and a future, and who plans for the future.
Normal humans have such plans, but I don't think
cows do. And normal humans have family and friends
who will grieve their death in ways more vivid and
longer-lasting than the way cows may care about
other cows. (Although a cow certainly misses her
calf for a long time, if the calf is taken from her.
That's why there is a major ethical problem with
dairy products.) If I really had to make such a
decision, I'd kill the cows."

Schadenberg commented saying, "Once again
Singer is making distinctions between human
beings he would consider normal and those he
would consider not normal, thus he is deciding
who is a person and who is not. Non-persons are
allowed to be killed." The Euthanasia Prevention
Coalition leader concluded, "even though Singer
does not like to be compared to the Nazi's
especially since his parents died in the Holocaust,
his philosophical position is identical to what the
Nazi's proposed. The Euthanasia Prevention
Coalition is primarily concerned for the lives
of people with disabilities and other vulnerable
persons."

A Tale of Two Terries

of Clinical Investigation published new research
on the recovery of a brain damaged man from his
19 years in a minimally conscious state, adding to
the growing evidence that those with “hopelessly”
severe brain injuries may be able to recuperate
with therapy or other kinds of assistance.

The Journal’s research focuses on the sudden
recovery of Terry Wallis, who experienced a car
wreck in 1984 when he was 19 years old. The
accident sheared the nerve connections in his
brain, putting him in a minimally conscious
state (MCS) and rendering him a quadriplegic.
Terry, a young husband with a newborn child,
was considered a hopeless case, especially
considering that his family could not pay the
$120,000 needed to consult a neurologist
about any possibility of recovery. However
in 2003, during one of the regular visits of his
mother, who had regularly visited him at the
Rehabilitation Centre in Mountain View,
Arkansas, he made what seemed a sudden
recovery, and spoke “mom”, his first word
in 19 years.

The research indicates that Terry’s brain grew
new tiny nerve connections over time, creating
a new nerve network to replace the old one that
was severely damaged in the car accident. While
doctors and neurologists are still baffled as to
‘why’ Terry recovered, the doctors at the
rehabilitation centre have indicated that Terry’s
recovery might be attributed to the visits of his
family, who took him out on weekends and
special occasions. This may have acted as a
mental therapy to help his brain recover.

“He now seems exactly like his old self,” says
Jerry Wallis, Terry’s father. Over the 19 years
of Terry’s coma, both Jerry and his mother
Angilee had doubts at some time or another
about whether or not it was better for Terry to
be alive. However, now both are glad they
never caved into those doubts. Since then
they have seen their son make strides in his
recovery with the ambition of walking for his
daughter. “He very often tells us how glad he
is to be alive,” says Terry’s father.

Terry Wallis’ remarkable recovery after 19
years, however, stands in stark opposition to
the case of Terri Schindler-Schiavo, who
received no therapy from her philandering
husband after her 1990 collapse. She was
instead dehydrated to death by court order in
March 2005. Although some doctors claim
that Terri Schiavo could not have made Terry
Wallis’ recovery since she was in a persistent
vegetative state (PVS), witnesses such as
former nurse Carla Iyer maintained that with
therapy, Schiavo, who said words like
“mommy, help me”, could have indeed
recovered over time.

New research on the ability of the brain to
recover over time questions the hastiness of
many in the medical profession to condemn
patients as irreversibly brain-dead or
damaged. Back in May, South African
researchers discovered a drug that helps
PVS patients temporarily recover to a fully
conscious state. In a BBC interview Dr. Ralf
Clauss, a scientist in nuclear medicine and
one of the drug researchers, stated that “For
every damaged area of the brain, there is a
dormant area, which seems to be a sort of
protective mechanism. The damaged tissue
is dead, there’s nothing you can do,” he
explained. “But it’s the dormant areas which
‘wake up’.”

When What Seems Broken is Perfect: The
Mother of a Disabled Child Tells her Story

(Note: A mother known to LifeSiteNews.com,
and who would like to remain anonymous,
wrote the following article in response to
an op-ed that appeared in the Globe and
Mail. That op-ed was written by a mother,
calling her self C. Smyth, who told how she
chose to abort her unborn child because the
baby suffered from a chromosomal disorder.
“Isn't it more cruel to bring a child burdened
with so many disadvantages into the world?”
Smyth wrote.)

July 20, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The
graph is still taped to the inside of my
kitchen cupboard, pencil on a string
dangling down beside it. It depicts the
progression of my newborn daughter’s
weight, most days showing a moderate
increase, and thus reflects a thriving
child. It ends abruptly at 80 days.

Recently, C. Smyth shared her agonizing
and very personal decision to terminate
a pregnancy after testing revealed a
severely disabled child.

My husband and I were faced with a similar
difficult decision. We too were in our 40’s,
educated and financially stable. We have
5 children at home and we love sports and
travel. The kids do well at school, are athletic,
and all are healthy as horses. Life was good
to us.

We first heard of our daughter’s genetic
condition long before she was diagnosed.
It was considered a lethal condition, an
extra 13th chromosome. Most babies don’t
make it to birth and those that do live a few
years and are severely disabled. I thought,
“Well, what is the point of that life?”

When the geneticist uttered the dreaded
words, “your daughter has trisomy 13,” and
it was a diagnosis about my baby and not
someone else’s, the reality was entirely
different. With the ferocity of a lioness, I
wanted to love and protect this little girl,
and do all that I could for her. If her
existence was only to be a few more
months of kicks and flutters in utero,
then I wanted her to have that life for
the sake of both of us. We named her
Annie.

After the diagnosis, the research began. It
was frantic, and went long into the night
for months. I researched medical details
and personal stories. We communicated
with parents all over the world who had
a child with this very rare condition. We
discovered that the babies can live longer,
but they may need a lot of medical
treatment. The most amazing discovery
was that the parents continually stated
that they treasured and delighted in every
day of their child’s life. They knew with
certainty that the gift of that life was not
theirs to keep. The children, called
“survivors” were blissfully happy and
progressed developmentally, albeit slowly.
It became increasingly clear to us that unless
the medical intervention to provide life was
excessive, Annie was better off alive than
dead.

We were not sure how we could do it. I was
the kind of mom who usually forgot to pack
a diaper bag. I would often be impatient when
one of my children couldn’t master the math
skills in their homework. Could I ever develop
the patience for a child who may not be able to
sit on her own for a year? How could we fit
Annie’s care and needs into our busy schedule?
We had 5 soccer teams in the summer! We were
more frightened than we had ever had been in
our lives. Love for Annie compelled us forward.

Annie was born full term, crying. She was mildly
afflicted, as the syndrome goes. She needed a
very small amount of oxygen and had
hypoglycemia. Annie could not take all of
her nutrition orally and so she had an NG tube
(nasal gastric tube), which was a tube that went
in through her nose down into her stomach. I
became skilled at its reinsertion, every 3 days.
We fed her expressed breast milk. Somehow,
we dealt with all of the issues. We knew that
with time Annie would take more feedings
orally and her need for oxygen would lessen,
and likely be eliminated completely.

We knew the first year would be rough.
Everyone pitched in. Our 12 year old son
took over the lawn maintenance and his
older sisters took on Annie’s developmental
progress and bought “mind stimulating” music
and ordered her a “Bumbo seat” to help develop
strength.

The whole family came together in ways that
I never dreamed possible. We discovered how
true our friends and family were by their support
and encouragement. Somehow, the homework
got done and the gang made it to their soccer
games.

At age 75 days, Annie smiled at us for the first
time. Even now, a year later, the memory of that
first and only smile causes me to cry.

Annie experienced respiratory distress at age
80 days and was transferred by ambulance to
the Children’s hospital. The physicians told us
she had pneumonia. Our beloved baby died less
than 24 hours later.

There are two ironies to this story.

The first is that we thought we had a choice of
life for Annie but the reality is that we did not.
The medical records, which we instinctively felt
compelled to obtain and have had reviewed,
reveal no signs of pneumonia. An effective
“Do not resuscitate” was ordered without our
knowledge or consent. The final computerized
medication report from the intensive care of
an excellent hospital is inexplicably missing.

The hospital issued a letter of apology stating
that sometimes “… communication does not
occur in as clear and consistent a fashion as we
would wish. For that, we are very sorry.” Recent
developments in medical science can be used to
diagnose and terminate certain lives but the
choice to use medicine to prolong these lives
doesn’t seem to be an option.

During her 80 days, our little Annie taught us
our greatest lessons in life. Through her life, we
experience the deepest sorrow and the most
intense love. She taught us the true meaning
and purpose of life and we are forever changed
as a family. Our children have learned that if
they are ever in need, their family will love them,
protect them and do anything to support them,
just like we did for Annie. They developed an
incredible empathy for the disabled and the
vulnerable.

The ultimate irony is that this little girl who
seemed so broken, flawed and seemingly
without purpose or value, was in fact, perfect
after all.

The Dawn Of Ananda by Annie Haslam

A beautiful CD. I learned about this CD from
reading the book "Crossing Over- The Stories
Behind The Stories" by John Edward. I really
liked John's Book, and found it informative. He
talks about Annie Haslam in Chapter 8 "Call Me
Michael". He talked about a song called "Precious
One". I decided to go and get the album over at
Amazon. (I'm a forever Amazon fan.) I was not
at all disappointed in the CD. I highly recommend
it. I like John Edward. (Compared to a few other
Occultists which I'm not too thrilled about. However
this isn't my forum for going into that particular
topic.)

Does he have a genuine gift? What I see is that he
gives a solid message to those who are bereaved.
I see that as a gift. I wouldn't mind seeing his show
back on TV once again. I am dismayed that it's not
being aired now. I liked that people had a chance
to have their loved ones on air to remember them
and show them off and talk about them. I think that
is cathartic and healing. I liked seeing the friends
and family members shown, and hearing about them.
The show was pretty good.

I'm not sure where to begin. Shawn's life was a
difficult one. I wouldn't trade a single moment
with him, and I'm finding this a little painful.

We went on a trip to Ohio to visit family. I
bought a toy carousel at one of those roadside
stops along the highway. I still have it. (I have
to check to see if it still works) I found out that
I was expecting shortly after we returned from
our trip. Shawn was very much a wanted child.
My pregnacy was uneventful, and not a drop
of morning sickness. I had cravings of macaroni
and cheese and snickers bars. (Which in hindsight
doesn't surprise me.) He was never any trouble
to me.

Ten years after a firefighter was left brain- damaged and mostly mute during a 1995 roof collapse, he did something that shocked his family and doctors: He perked up. "I want to talk to my wife," Donald Herbert said out of the blue Saturday.

Staff members of the nursing home where he has lived for more than seven years raced to get Linda Herbert on the telephone. "The word of the day was 'amazing,'" Herbert's uncle, Simon Manka, said.
.
It was the first of many conversations Herbert, who will turn 44 Saturday, had with his wife, four sons and other family and friends during a 14-hour stretch, Manka said. "He did recognize several family members and friends, and did call them by name," Manka said.
.
"How long have I been away?" Herbert asked. "We told him almost 10 years," the uncle said. "He thought it was only three months."
.
Herbert was fighting a house fire Dec. 29, 1995, when the roof collapsed, burying him under debris. After going without air for six minutes, Herbert was comatose for 2 1/2 months and has undergone therapy ever since.

News accounts in the days and years after his injury describe Herbert as blind and with little, if any, memory. Video shows him receiving physical therapy but apparently unable to communicate and with little awareness of his surroundings.

Manka declined to discuss his nephew's current condition, or whether the apparent progress was continuing. The family was seeking privacy while doctors evaluated Herbert, he said.

As word of Herbert's progress spread, a steady stream of visitors arrived at the Father Baker Manor nursing home in this Buffalo suburb. "He stayed up 'til early morning talking with his boys and catching up on what they've been doing over the last several years," firefighter Anthony Liberatore told a local television station. Herbert's sons were 14, 13, 11 and 3 when he was injured.

Staff members at the nursing facility recognized the change in Herbert, Manka said, when they heard him speaking and "making specific requests."

Dr. Rose Lynn Sherr of New York University Medical Center said when patients recover from brain injuries, they usually do so within two or three years. "It's almost unheard of after 10 years," she said, "but sometimes things do happen and people suddenly improve and we don't understand why."

Manka said visitors let Herbert set the pace of the conversations and did not bring up the fire in which he was injured. As doctors try to determine the scope of his recovery, Herbert's family is cautiously optimistic the improvements will continue, reports Barbara Burns of CBS radio affiliate WBEN.

M. Leisure. Her son's name is: London K. Leisure.
London was born on Jaunuary 21, 1971, and was
called to rest on May 21, 1989. I did not have the
pleasure to meet London.

He was a member of the PAC-8 Championship
Basketball Team of Pottstown High School
graduating in June, 1988, and he was a member
of Second Baptist Church.

I was really impressed by Arsonia. She has done
wonderful things in memory of her son whom
she loves dearly. She wrote the book: "London's
Test of Love". I'm glad that I had the opportunity
to meet this remarkable woman. She is only one
in many remarkable people that I met through
my Shawn.

When I purchased a book from Arsonia, she
graciously sent me an autographed copy!

I noticed that her book was available through
Amazon.com. It might be a little hard to find,
but worth the looking. I can try and see if I
can locate any other information.

I found over at amazon that they have a few
used books of "London's Test Of Love"
available, and that Arsonia wrote another
book "The Legend of "Chicken Hill" -
March 2005. I'm ordering her new book.

Thank You very much for your recent communication regarding the Terri Schiavo case. I appreciate your thoughts and comments on this very important issue.

On March 20, 2005, the U. S. House of Representatives passed S686 which established the right of a representative of an "incapacitated person" to file a petition in federal court to have a federal judge review whether prior actions relative to the care and custody of the incapacitated person were constitutional under the United States Constitution. Since I, at that time, was part of a U. S. House delegation attending 22nd Annual Congress/German Parliament Conference in Berlin, Germany, I and the other members of our delegation were not present for that vote. Nonetheless, had I been present in the House to vote on S686, I would have supported it because I believe, in cases where there is significant debate and controversy surrounding whether the rights of an incapacitated person are being protected, I felt that permitting access to federal courts to review that situataion was and is appropriate.

As we now know since that Congressional legislative action, federal appellate courts have looked at the earlier Florida state court and Supreme Court decisions on the Schiavo case and have found that no constitutional law had been violated and the Florida trial court's determination to allow Terri's feeding tube to be removed is legally valid. While much national debate continues over this sad situation, the case does highlight the need for individuals to fully document their wishes should they become incapacitated so that family members are not put in a position where they may disagree on how an incapacitated person's care will continue and have to resort to judicial proceedings to resolve a matter.

I am inspired to create this new site in remembrance
of my Shawn. He has been with me in spirit and has
been my inspiration. With what occurred to Terri
Schindler Schiavo, I wanted to create his own
corner of this world in the hope to show my support
for the Schindler family and maybe to encourage
understanding. I understand some of what the
Schindler's have had to endure with their efforts
in trying their very best to defend their disabled
child.

I wanted to express my condolences to them, and
wanted them to know that there are those who
have some understanding of what they have had to
endure. Their Terri touched many, and caught the
eyes of the world. She helped to bring to light a
terrible influence in this world - one that needs to
be challenged. I believe that she is a latter day
martyr. One who the Lord will work great things
through. One in being to expose the corruption
and evil influence that is taking root in our world
society. Terri, and her family, are an inspiration.
