I want to update you about the impact of Hurricane Katrina on Easter Seals' clients, families, and staff members in the Gulf Coast Region.

Easter Seals' services for people with disabilities most devastated by this disaster are in New Orleans and southern Louisiana. Our Louisiana-based staff has shared that they cannot adequately express the enormity of this event and the seemingly endless stories of loss and suffering they are encountering everyday. Recent reports include:

Employees from Easter Seals Louisiana are are working feverishly to find as many clients as possible, including more than 500 served by the office in Metairie, Louisiana.

Children and adults living with disabilities evacuated southern Louisiana and left behind vital medical equipment upon which they rely to carry out their daily lives -- wheelchairs, walkers and canes, shower benches, commodes and adult and children's diapers are all in short supply.

Sadly, seven Easter Seals employees have not yet been accounted for from southern Louisiana.

Amidst the tragedy, we are also beginning to hear stories of triumph. Joey and Bernell, two mentally-disabled friends left homeless from the storm were reunited at a Slidell, Louisiana shelter. Easter Seals was able to rent a home for them to accommodate their needs and to allow Bernell to keep his two beloved dogs.

Easter Seals is meeting the needs of thousands of people with disabilities in the Gulf Coast and across the country as families are forced to relocate. Help us ensure there are more stories like Joey and Bernell.
